The impact of viral and bacterial infection on the respiratory epithelium

Symposium
Chairs: S. Matalon (Birmingham, United States of America), R. Lucas (Augusta, Ga, United States of America)
Aims: This symposium will introduce the audience to the mechanisms developed by viruses and bacteria to invade the lower airways and to escape the local defence mechanisms of the lungs, with special emphasis on the respiratory epithelium. A better understanding of these issues can lead to a more focused approach to fighting virally and bacterially induced lung pathology.
