Cough: a major problem in lung disease

Aims: To show the evidence for the clinical burden of cough and how understanding the potential mechanisms may lead to new and effective treatments. At the end of this session, the audience will know how to diagnose chronic cough in lung disease; appreciate the clinical burden of chronic cough in lung disease; understand the current concepts regarding the causes of chronic cough; be aware of the advances in our understanding of the role of nerves in the cough reflex and how this may lead to new drugs; and have insight into the potential novel therapies and their impact on the clinical burden.
Target audience: Pulmonologists, emergency medicine doctors, respiratory physicians, clinical researchers, general practitioners, research fellows, basic scientists, intensivists, nurses, pathologists, and trainees.
