PG18 - New challenges in fighting tuberculosis in Europe

Postgraduate Course
Chairs: G. B. Migliori (Tradate, Italy), J-P. Zellweger (Lausanne, Switzerland)
Aims: TB is still a public health priority in Europe and TB notification rates are increasing in two WHO regions (Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa). The WHO has recently updated the principles of the DOTS strategy, which gives major importance to Standards for TB Care. An international team of experts, coordinated by WHO and ATS, has recently defined the standards (Speaker 1 represented the ERS). Smoking is considered a risk factor for TB, but strong evidence has been lacking. Recently a systematic review of the evidence has been completed (speaker 2 participated). Multidrug resistance and HIV infection are still major threats for TB control in eastern Europe despite the availability of second line anti-TB drugs and anti-retrovirals. This course provides an update on these topics including the new WHO guidelines on DOTS; the results of a large study evaluating DOTS plus effectiveness in former Soviet countries; the new policy on universal access to ARVs and the new guidelines on TB/HIV collaborating activities. The specific aims of this course are to update participants on:
• the International Standards of TB Care;
• the evidence that tobacco addiction is a risk factor for the development of TB and for poor treatment outcome;
• new approaches to control and treat multidrug-resistant TB and to implement TB/HIV collaborating activities.
