Hot topics
Chairs: Francesco Blasi (Milan, Italy), Felix C. Ringshausen (Hannover, Germany)
Aims: At the end of this hot topic session, the audience will better understand the common mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and the impact of the resistome on daily clinical practice; be up to date regarding the epidemiology and risk factors for multidrug-resistant bacteria in both acute and chronic respiratory infections; be aware of useful tools that raise suspicion of a MDR respiratory infection both in the community and in the hospital; understand the role of new and old antibiotics in the management of respiratory infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria in light of the most recently published literature; appreciate the principles of antibiotic stewardship; and be conversant with the current recommendations of public health organisations that aim to reduce antibiotic resistance in respiratory infections.
Target audience: Hospitalists (including those working in the ICU), general practitioners, microbiologists, public health stakeholders, and scientists interested in antimicrobial resistance.
