Sleep and neuromuscular diseases: assessment and management of respiratory problems

Aims: to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the basic concepts and established practices for assessment and management of respiratory problems in patients with neuromuscular disorders. After an introductory lecture about the physiological basis of respiratory problems in various diseases, this session will consider the following: pulmonary function testing, respiratory muscle testing, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, cough assist devices, swallowing disorders, sleep problems and pharmacological treatment.
