Respiratory nanomedicine: application of multifunctional nanoparticles in diagnostics and therapy

Symposium
Chairs: W. Kreyling (Neuherberg, Germany), C. Lehr (Saarbrücken, Germany)
Aims: This symposium will:
• provide background information about the rapidly progressing field of engineered nanoparticles and their therapeutic and diagnostic applications;
• describe deposition and translocation pathways of inhaled nanoparticles and the physicochemical characteristics that make them unique for targeting regions of the respiratory tract and extrapulmonary organs;
• discuss potential undesirable effects of nanoparticles on target tissues (portal-of-entry and remote organs) and respective toxicological implications during the entire lifecycle, including occupational exposure during development and production.
