Clinical trial: antibiotic use in the community

Symposium
Chairs: F. Blasi (Milan, Italy), M. Woodhead (Manchester, United Kingdom)
Aims: This symposium will:
• describe the presentation, diagnosis, investigation, management and outcomes for people with cough/chest infection in general medical practice in 14 primary care networks in 13 countries in Europe. The study is the first GRACE clinical study (GRACE-01) funded by EU as a FP6 network of excellence;
• discuss the results of a community-based trial on antibiotic use in the prevention of exacerbations in patients with chronic bronchitis. This trial is a double blind randomized clinical trial, which compares intermittent treatment with moxifloxacin or placebo over 48 weeks (plus 24 weeks of follow-up).
