Chairs:
Aims: This session will provide an overview of the evaluation and management of patients who have ARDS. The focus will be on recognising ARDS, including newer definitions, and comprehensive care of the ARDS patient. Specific components will include basic tenets of ventilator management and practical approaches to lung protective ventilation. Non-ventilatory management, including the role of fluid management, prone positioning, neuromuscular blockade, and corticosteroids will be addressed, examining the evidence for and against these and other aspects of treatment. Finally, advanced management of the severely hypoxemic ARDS patient will be examined. The participant will complete the session with a stronger appreciation for current research and a framework for the practical aspects of managing patients with ARDS.
