Paediatric procedures

Live from the clinic
Chairs: M. Pijnenburg (Rotterdam, Netherlands), J. van Meerbeeck (Edegem (Antwerp), Belgium)
Aims: To explain how several procedures in paediatrics may be performed and organised. Children from a special group of patients and many procedures that are routine in adults may be challenging in children. Bronchoscopy can provide crucial information in children with several complaints such as stridor, recurrent airways infections or unexplained respiratory symptoms. In most centres, bronchoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia requiring excellent communication with anaesthesiologists. Multiple breath washout (MBW) tests in children are very sensitive in picking up airways abnormalities in children and can be performed in children of all ages. Still, expertise is needed to perform a successful MBW test in a preschool child. While MBW tests require at least some cooperation from the child, the hypoxic challenge test does not, at least if performed in a body box. Lastly, CT scanning of the chest may be much more informative if scanning is spirometry controlled. This procedure will be demonstrated with valuable input from a paediatric radiologist.
