The new ERS/ATS/IASLC classification of lung adenocarcinoma: practice update

Symposium
Chairs: K. M. Kerr (Foresterhill, Aberdeen, United Kingdom), P. Van Schil (Edegem (Antwerp), Belgium)
Aims: To present a new multidisciplinary subclassification of lung adenocarcinoma developed by an international panel of lung cancer experts sponsored by ERS/ATS and IASLC. After attending this symposium the audience will understand how this classification will:
a) Resolve the ongoing discrepancy in the pathologic vs clinical use of the term bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma - which currently determines 100% vs 5-20% 5-year survival, respectively;
b) Recommend an international standard for histological subclassification of lung adenocarcinomas;
c) Define clinical/histological/radiological/molecular subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma and define clinical, radiological, pathologic and molecular terminology and criteria.
