PG2 - Respiratory physiology: pulmonary gas transfer and arterial blood gases

Postgraduate Course
Chairs: S. Ward (Leeds, United Kingdom), J. Roca (Barcelona, Spain)
Aims: This is the second course in a three-year postgraduate core curriculum covering the main areas in respiratory physiology pertinent to clinical practice in respiratory disease. The aims of this module are:
• to describe the physiological principles that are fundamental to pulmonary gas exchange and therefore dictate arterial blood gas status;
• to consider how and why gas-exchange function is affected by disease at rest and during exercise;
• to describe current techniques for monitoring gas-exchange function and arterial blood gas status.
