Diagnosis of paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in settings with limited resources

Hot topics
Chairs: W. De Backer (Antwerp, Belgium), E. Lombardi (Florence, Italy)
Aims: All children with OSA symptoms should undergo some sort of objective testing prior to treatment interventions (e.g. adenotonsillectomy). Nocturnal video polysomnography is the gold standard for diagnosing OSA in childhood but nocturnal polygraphy or oximetry can be alternative diagnostic tools in settings with limited resources. Validated questionnaires can be used to identify children at risk of OSA and to prioritise them for polysomnography. The successful experiences with adult sleep medicine should be used to set research goals regarding the development of diagnostic tools that can serve as alternatives to polysomnography in children.
