In the frontline of the fight against tuberculosis

Hot topics
Chairs: M. Lipman (London, United Kingdom), T. Aksamit (Rochester, United States of America)
Aims: TB is clinical and public health priority. a) Among new solutions to support clinical and public health management of TB and latent infection (LTBI), M-Health has been supported by WHO and a ERS/WHO project has been launched. b) WHO guidelines recommend difficult-to-treat TB cases are managed by specialised teams, ideally covering a wide range of clinical expertise. ERS and WHO (European office) have developed an electronic platform operating free cost in different languages which, so far, contributed to support clinical management of over 300 cases. c) To manage MDR and XDR-TB there is a desperate need to better understand the role and contribution of new and repurposed drugs to improve bacteriological conversion and treatment success while preventing drug resistance. d) New tools have been recently developed to diagnose TB and LTBI, and new perspectives are therefore opening to improve TB control and, in some settings, to approach pre-elimination.
