Aims: to explain the value of respiratory muscle training as an adjunct therapeutic modality in pulmonary rehabilitation and secondary prevention of chronic lung disorders; to describe recent advances in methods to diagnose abnormal respiratory mechanics and to phenotype and assess treatment efficacy in respiratory disease patients; to identify the value of new instruments to capture patients’ perception of physical activity and strategies that promote an active lifestyle in patients with COPD; to explain the necessity of standardising the execution and data reporting of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in patients with chronic lung conditions; to contrast what patients with chronic lung disorders report about their experiences of undertaking cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
