Mechanisms underlying acute exacerbation of respiratory disease

Symposium
Chairs: K. Bracke (Ghent, Belgium), T. Maher (St. Albans, United Kingdom), R. Chambers (London, United Kingdom)
Aims: to explain that exacerbations represent occasions of respiratory tract dysbiosis, leading to dysregulated host immune responses and a perpetuating cycle of inflammation and abnormal lung remodelling; to describe the differences in the composition of respiratory tract microbiota, and link these differences to the frequent-exacerbator phenotype and as drivers of inflammation, fibrosis and remodelling in the context of respiratory disease progression.
