Interaction between innate and adaptive immunity in lung disease
Hot topicsChairs: R. Bals (Marburg, Germany), P. Hiemstra (Leiden, The Netherlands)
Aims: The goal of the symposium is to provide an overview on recent developments in research on interactions between innate and adaptive immunity in the lung. Specific aims are:
• to highlight the multiple ways in which the innate immune systems helps to shape adaptive immune responses;
• to provide basic concepts regarding biofilm formation and bacterial communication, and the way airway epithelial cells interfere with this process;
• to discuss the possible impact of our increased understanding of the way innate immunity affects the development of asthma;
• to highlight the importance of macrophage activation in anti-mycobacterial immunity based on selected deficiencies in patients;
• to provide a platform to discuss how recent developments in basic and clinical science can be used to develop new treatment options.
