Aims: to discuss the key characteristics of the different acute respiratory disease syndrome phenotypes and how these affect clinical management; to discuss the pathophysiology of lung injury induced by high respiratory effort and how clinical management can reduce the risk of lung injury caused by high patient effort; to discuss the principles of novel techniques for respiratory monitoring and how their clinical application can improve outcomes; to discuss the role of different techniques for noninvasive respiratory support in patients with acute hypoxemic failure.
