Severe asthma: moving from phenotyping to endotyping

Symposium
Chairs: I. Pavord (Leicester, United Kingdom), M. Humbert (Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, France)
Aims: After the session the audience will better understand this heterogeneous disease. As biological characteristics are identified, phenotypes should continue to evolve towards asthma endotypes. Such an approach is exemplified in a recent review by S. Wenzel (Clin Exp Allergy, nov 2011). Moving forward, this phenotyping to endotyping will require an integrated approach, and then results in ongoing molecular phenotyping. This enhances our ability to effectively treat heterogeneous diseases, such as severe asthma, better in molecular therapeutic approaches.
