Bronchoconstriction under construction: work-related lung disease and how it's diagnosed

Symposium
Chairs: S. Burge (Solihull, United Kingdom), J. Makonga-Braaksma (Woudenberg, Netherlands)
Aims: The aims of this symposium are: to provide a better understanding and update of the patients' process of examining and diagnosing occupational lung disease and answer the question what are the implications of the new guidelines for management of work-related asthma; to facilitate implementation of the diagnostic section from the new ERS guidelines for occupational asthma; to describe tests which should be available in all lung function laboratories; to describe tests which should be confined to specialist laboratories; and to provide evidence-based guidance on the interpretation of these tests.
The programme is of special relevance to all lung function laboratories, and all those concerned with the diagnosis of occupational adult asthma. This symposium is based on the ERS evidence-based Guidelines for the management of work-related asthma (published in 2012) and the ERS task force on Specific Inhalation Testing (SIC) due to report in 2013 (Baur X, Sigsgaard T, Aasen TB, Burge PS, Heederik D, Henneberger P, Maestrelli P, Rooyackers J, Schlunssen V, Vandenplas O, Wilken D on behalf of the ERS Task Force on the management of work-related asthma, Eur Respir J, 2012;39:529-545).
