PG19 Obstructive sleep-disordered breathing throughout childhood: diagnosis, associated morbidity and treatment

Postgraduate Course
Chairs: P. Aurora (London, United Kingdom), W. De Backer (Antwerp, Belgium), A. Boudewyns (Edegem, Belgium)
Aims: The aims of this course are to: summarise main rules for staging sleep and scoring respiratory events and arousals in children; provide examples for the application of these rules using clinical cases; emphasize that obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in childhood is associated with morbidity mainly from the central nervous and cardiovascular systems; to summarize available treatment modalities for paediatric obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (administration of anti-inflammatory medications, adenotonsillectomy, weight loss, nasal CPAP/BiPAP, use of orthodontic appliances and craniofacial surgery) and their efficacy in improving polysomnography parameters; to propose indications for treatment of obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in childhood based on the available evidence that relief of upper airway obstruction reverses associated morbidity.
