Reduced endogenous anti-inflammatory mediators as a new mechanism of airway disease

Symposium
Chairs: P. J. Barnes (London, United Kingdom), E. Bel (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
Aims: The aims of this session are to:
- understand basic cellular and molecular mechanisms that promote resolution of airway
inflammation and injury
- describe potential roles for airway epithelial and other structural cells as checkpoint regulators of inflammation resolution
- describe new anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving chemical mediators in the lung
- highlight recent discoveries underlying the persistence of inflammation in common airway diseases, such as asthma and COPD
Uncontrolled asthma is characterised by a defect in counter regulation
