New tools for the trade: novel emerging technologies to assess lung development and disease

Symposium
Chairs: S. Ranganathan (Brighton, United Kingdom), P. Latzin (Bern, Switzerland)
Aims: The audience will learn about exciting new technologies that are likely to impact on the study of pulmonary structure and function in neonatology, paediatrics and intensive care in the future. After the session, they will be aware of the theoretical and physiological aspects that underpin the techniques and new information obtained using the various techniques from different perspectives of lung disease, including potential origins in lung development, alveolarisation, respiratory control and its influence on mechanics, ventilation inhomogeneities and airway inflammation. At the same time, they will be able to evaluate their clinical potential based on the presented data.
