Asthma and smoking: dangerous liaisons - an interactive session

Grand round
Chairs: Irene Heijink (Groningen, Netherlands), Neil Thomson (Glasgow, United Kingdom)
Aims: To provide an update on the effects of smoking on asthma outcomes; review the effects of maternal and passive smoking on childhood asthma; educate the audience with regard to smoking cessation; reinforce the smoking ban in public spaces; and describe the mechanisms underlying the increase in asthma severity due to smoking.
Target audience: This grand round is suitable for a broad range of health professionals, including clinicians and scientists. Clinicians who face difficulties in managing asthma that may be induced by cigarette smoking would benefit in particular, along with clinicians with patients who develop asthma attacks that are provoked by passive smoking; of the latter group, paediatricians who deal with second-hand smoke-exposed children may be especially interested in this grand round.
