Nutrition in chronic respiratory disease

Symposium
Chairs: Frits M.E. Franssen (Horn, Netherlands), Sally J. Singh (Leicester, United Kingdom)
Aims: This session is on the role of diet and nutrients in respiratory health. Its aims are to provide an overview of the ERS statement on COPD and nutrition, and the cost effectiveness of interventions; to describe nutritional assessment methods and the value of nutritional intervention; to review how nutritional interventions improve performance and can serve as adjuncts to pulmonary rehabilitation; to highlight the importance of nutritional support in critical illness; and to describe the impact of diet on the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease from an epidemiological perspective.
Target audience: All clinicians involved in the acute and chronic care of patients with chronic respiratory disease, including those involved in rehabilitation (physician/physiotherapists/nurses and dieticians), and in the ICU.
