Interaction between innate and adaptive immunity in lung disease

Hot topics
Chairs: R. Bals (Marburg, Germany), P. Hiemstra (Leiden, The Netherlands)
The goal of the symposium is to provide an overview on recent developments in research on interactions between innate and adaptive immunity in the lung. Specific aims are:
• to highlight the multiple ways in which the innate immune systems helps to shape adaptive immune responses;
• to provide basic concepts regarding biofilm formation and bacterial communication, and the way airway epithelial cells interfere with this process;
• to discuss the possible impact of our increased understanding of the way innate immunity affects the development of asthma;
• to highlight the importance of macrophage activation in anti-mycobacterial immunity based on selected deficiencies in patients;
• to provide a platform to discuss how recent developments in basic and clinical science can be used to develop new treatment options.
